Firewall Protection for Your Computer

Category: General Tips

Let’s start with this:

  1. If you have dial up, you do not need a firewall. This is because your computer, and more specifically, your internet, are not connected all the time to the computer. You need to dial up a number to connect, and you hang up when done. So you are not connected.
  2. If you have DSL (digital subscriber line), which is through the telephone company, or cable, which is obviously through the cable company, then you need a firewall. This is because you are always connected to the internet.

A firewall just keeps the people out you want out, and the stuff in you want in. It can actually be hardwarem such as a router, or software installed on your computer. When you first install the software, everytime something tries to access, or communicate with someone outside of your computer it stops it. It will then ask you what you want to do with this request. You can save the same answer for this attempted internet access everytime.

I personally run Norton’s NIS 2004. It runs very well for, and has the firewall included. I did run Zonealarm, the free version, but it made all of my internet slow, and would not allow some of my software to close. So I switched to Norton’s. I have not had any issues, with the antivirus software, as well as the firewall software. I have read some negative reviews about the NIS 2005, so I can not recommend that. But I would recommend NIS 2004 if you wanted 1 software to run all of your security for your computer.

So just remember, if you have made the switch to dsl, or cable internet, you better have a firewall on your system. If you are planning on making the switch to dsl, or cable, then you will need a firewall.
