I read a very good book the other weekend: The Three Signs Of A Miserable Job. I really believe that all managers should read this book with an open mind, and see what they can do to improve the quality of life for their work force.

I took a good amount of information out of this book. I learned about the “measurables”, and that in order to be truly motivated and successful, you need to be able to measure this. I guess I had always known this, but I personally am not measured in my job. This is frustrating for me, as an Engineer, to not know what deems my job or performance to be successful or which needs to be improved.

My boss can easily rate me low just because I bring up valid points against his crazy ideas. From his perspective, I am negative and always going against him. From my perspective, I am an IE, so I crunch numbers. I need numbers to verify my performance. For example, I was tasked to do training on Monday. They gave me no real guidelines, so I had to ask the question: How will we measure our success? Before reading this book, I probably would not have asked the question. I would have gone out, and attempted to train. What would have then happened is the owner would be upset at me for not training the way he wanted and by his measurements, and I would have failed (by his standards).

This book has shown that you need measurables. And, that you need much more as well to be successful. I really enjoyed the book, and will be reading it again. I highly recommend it.
